Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and his wife Ruth Stafford Peale founded Guideposts in 1945. With a printing of 10,000 copies, the first issue of Guideposts was a four-page leaflet containing a single story by World War II flying ace, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker. The demand for subscriptions increased quickly thereafter. But in 1947, a fire destroyed the circulation files and the magazine almost disappeared altogether. Fortunately, a report on the fire by the famous radio broadcaster Lowelll Thomas, and an article in Reader's Digest, set off a groundswell of support. Soon, Guideposts had more subscribers than before the fire.
Today, Guideposts even has companion editions in large
print and cassette for the visually impaired. After 60 years
of publishing, the primary activities of the Guideposts organization
are award-winning Guideposts magazines, best-selling
books, and outreach services that demonstrate the power of hope
and inspiration. |
